About Musanze Caves
The Musanze Caves are a remarkable 2-km-long volcanic cave system formed approximately 65 million years ago by ancient lava flows from the Virunga volcanoes. Located near the gateway town for gorilla trekking, the caves offer a fascinating geological complement to Rwanda's wildlife experiences. The cave system features vast chambers, intricate lava formations, and colonies of fruit bats. Local legend holds that the caves were used as hiding places during historic conflicts, and they played a role during the 1994 genocide. A guided tour takes approximately 2 hours and reveals the caves' geological wonders, bat populations, and cultural significance.
