About Lake Kivu
Lake Kivu is one of Africa's Great Lakes and arguably the most beautiful — a vast freshwater lake framed by mist-shrouded volcanic mountains, rolling tea plantations, and charming lakeside towns. Unlike many African lakes, Kivu is bilharzia-free and has no hippos or crocodiles, making it safe for swimming, kayaking, and water sports. The lake is dotted with picturesque islands, and the lakeside towns of Rubavu (Gisenyi) and Rusizi (Cyangugu) offer a relaxed, tropical atmosphere. Lake Kivu is the perfect complement to Rwanda's intense wildlife experiences, providing a serene setting for rest and reflection.
