About Gorongosa National Park
Gorongosa National Park is Africa's most inspiring conservation comeback story. Once described as "the place where Noah parked his Ark" for its extraordinary wildlife abundance, the park was devastated during Mozambique's civil war (1977β1992). Through a pioneering partnership between the Mozambican government and the Carr Foundation, Gorongosa has undergone a remarkable restoration. Lion numbers have increased from 4 to over 100, elephants from 200 to 700+, and the floodplains once again teem with herds of waterbuck, wildebeest, and buffalo. The park's diverse landscape β from Rift Valley floodplains to the 1,863-meter Mount Gorongosa rainforest β supports exceptional biodiversity.
