About Samburu National Reserve
Samburu National Reserve is northern Kenya's most celebrated wildlife sanctuary — a dramatic landscape of rocky hills, palm-fringed rivers, and semi-arid savanna that is home to the famous 'Samburu Special Five': Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, Somali ostrich, gerenuk, and beisa oryx. These five species are found nowhere else in Kenya's southern parks. The life-giving Ewaso Ng'iro River cuts through the reserve, creating a vital oasis that draws incredible concentrations of wildlife. Samburu also played a starring role in Elsa the lioness's story from 'Born Free.' The reserve is complemented by the rich cultural heritage of the Samburu people — a proud pastoral tribe closely related to the Maasai.
